Every prop in The Cradle is now our own

By Encrypted Cat / 0xKOT · Originally published on itch.io

Last time I showed you the asset library: 58 props, all generated in Blender by code. Today’s build puts them into the game.

The grit pass

The new props looked too clean for a sanatorium abandoned since 1996. So they all got one shared wear system: rust on the iron, chipped enamel on the beds, grime in the corners, scratches where hands touch, sun-faded paint and labels. It’s all made by the same code, so every chair gets old in its own way.

The swap

All 44 borrowed props are gone from The Cradle. Beds, desks, cabinets, radios, lamps, crates, the TV and the cassette players are now our own, matched in size to what they replaced, so every room keeps its layout. Phones get their own lighter versions.

What’s still borrowed

To be honest about what’s left: the shape of the children’s gas mask, and some wall, floor and fabric textures, all free CC0 assets. Those are next on the list.

What’s next

  • The whole library goes on Sketchfab for free under CC BY 4.0.
  • A new trailer, captured on the new props.
  • More fixes from your playtests. Keep them coming!

If the game runs slower on your laptop after this update, please tell me in the comments. The new props use slightly more video memory, and I can trim it.
